Entertaining show spices up event

IT was not just all serious academic stuff at the Star Education Fair 2008 which began yesterday at the Penang International Sport Arena (PISA).

There were plenty of entertainment, including stage presentations, to keep visitors occupied while they hunt for suitable courses or career paths to take from the more than 110 exhibitors at over 200 booths at the two-day fair.

The stage presentations began with a special appearance by 11 of the 12 finalists of The Malaysian Dreamgirl, the country’s first online reality model search competition.

The Malaysian Dreamgirl finalist Nurul Nadia, 20, performing a song to the delight of the crowd.

In a fun and entertaining introduc-tory session with DJ Alvin of Red FM, they revealed an intellectual side too.

Jean Fong, 21, a pharmacy student from Kuala Lumpur, said she joined the contest with an open mind.

“I am very excited to have got this far as it is my first attempt at modelling,” said Fong, who was among 200 hopefuls who had auditioned for the competition.

The girls, aged between 17 and 27, will also appear at the Fun with Red FM time slot at the PISA concourse stage between noon and 1pm today and also tour the booths.

Visitors were also treated to a fashion show titled Marionette Kingdom by Equator Academy of Art whose students designed the outfits and assembled the music pieces for the show.

“We displayed 41 outfits with a puppet-like theme to create a fun, cheerful mood,” said Saiful Redzuan, a lecturer with the academy’s fashion design department.

There was also a Rancak Bersama SuriaFM deejay slots with guest artistes Farah of AF2 and Sheila Abdul with a repeat scheduled from 3.45pm to 4.45pm today. Farah and Sheila will be at the SuriaFM booth to sign autographs from 5pm to 6pm today.

Other stage presentations scheduled today are a Limkokwing University Sound and Music performance and a hair design competition from 1.15pm to 2.15pm; Creating Funky Cupcakes cooking demonstration by KDU College from 2.30pm to 3.30pm; and Raffles Design Institute fashion show and multimedia works from 5pm to 6pm.

The Red Ryders from Red FM will also be present at the fair today to conduct games and give aspiring deejays a chance to display their talent with Red FM’s Radio Idol, a voice talent search for university and college students. Just drop by at The Star’s Multimedia booth to record your voice.

At the KDU College Penang booths, its Mass Communications Department is inviting visitors to record happy anniversary messages for the college’s 25th anniversary on camera in a mock studio with the best-recorded message to win RM250.

“On top of that, our nursing students are also giving free blood pressure tests to visitors, while our hotel management students will demonstrate the art of baking cupcakes and presenting mocktails,” said KDU Col-lege Penang general manager Peggy Lim.

Disted-Stamford College is offering a RM300 rebate for those who sign up as well as merit scholarships for students with good SPM results.

Those wishing to attend education and career talks today should head for PISA’s function rooms. The talks scheduled today are SPM Physics and Additional Mathematics, Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy, Psychology, Medi-cine and Dentistry.

Visitors can still take part in the Hunt for The Star contest by counting The Star logos at the fair premises to stand the chance of winning a Panasonic 32-inch LCD television, home theatre system, digital camera or jar rice cooker. Entry forms are available at the information counter.

A fun newscasting event will be held at The Star’s Multimedia booth from noon to 6pm today for tertiary students. Selected winners will get a mystery gift each.
